The Year 1s have been designing and making windsocks as part of their weather topic. This has integrated well into the Engineering project as the children have had to use the EDP (Engineering Design Process) to plan, create and test their windsocks, as well as employing several Engineering Habits of Mind (EHOMs), such as adapting, improving, visualising and creative problem solving.

Indeed, the children found several problems with their designs when they started the build process: – the tissue paper had to be light enough to move in the wind, but the structure had to be quite rigid so that it didn’t break.

The windsock activity is linked to Year 1’s study of The Gruffalo’s Child, in particular the weather in the deep, dark wood.
